The author of the article studies some theoretical problems connected with the definition of the term «neology» in Russian linguistics and shows the importance of its usage and strict definition for the purpose of Russian phraseology studying nowadays. The general definition of innovation is given on the base of the existing points of view survey and analysis. This definition may be also spread on the idioms. It is also shown in the article the difference between the terms «phraseological (idiomatic) innovation» and «praseological (idiomatic) neologism».
