The article reveals the separate aspects of the process of awakening of the Finnish national self-awareness, which took place in the XIX century, when Finland was an autonomy of the Russian Empire. On the basis of Russian and Finnish historical literature the author describes the process of the searches of the national and historical identity by Finns.
