The article’s subject is Herzen’s life and work which were run through by the idea of value of human personality  and  individual  freedom.  This  determined  the  direction  of  his  struggle  against  autocracy  and serfdom. His philosophical ideas are reviewed, the basis of which is materialistic understanding of nature, cognoscibility of the world and disagreement with some statements of metaphysical materialism.
