The article deals with the evolution of the idea of God in European civilization. Connection of this idea with the different social and spiritual fields is established. Today's break up with religion reveals crisis of the West, when hedonism is coming to the forefront. The positive role of religion becomes clear only now when the majority of Europeans have become non-religious.
