The article is devoted the problem of forming the national identity of the russian people and the role of consciousness in this process. studed as the bases of its objective status in the structure of the population of the country and the causes non-recognition by political elites of historical russia. The positive value of nationalism and need to build adequate model of interethnic relations are substantiated.
