          <artTitle lang="ENG">On Cultural and Pragmatic Adaptation in Neural Machine Translation (Based on English, Russian and Armenian Political Media Discourse) </artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">The article focuses on semantic and cognitive-pragmatic adequacy of neural machine translation in transmitting political media texts containing culturally marked invective units. The relevance of the study is determined by the widespread integration of neural machine translation systems into media production processes aimed at the rapid dissemination of information in multiple languages. The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of translations performed by professional translators of online media outlets and neural machine translations (Google Translate, DeepL, Yandex Translate) to identify typical machine translation errors in rendering culturally marked invective vocabulary and the need for their post-editing by humans. The research material includes fragments of political media texts in Russian, English, and Armenian containing implicitly and explicitly expressed culturally marked elements of verbal aggression (zoometaphor-invective, ethno-dysphemism, pseudo-ethnic nomination, pejorative vocabulary etc.), as well as their translations into the target languages. The source language varies depending on the specific case. A comparative-contrastive methodology was applied, combining discourse analysis, cross-cultural and translation-oriented approaches, to identify differences at the semantic and pragmatic levels, as well as at the level of culturally conditioned cognitive components of the text. It was revealed that neural machine translation systems produce systematic errors associated with the predominance of the literal translation principle, resulting in either the loss or, on the contrary, to the intensification of verbal aggression, the disruption of communicative impact, and the inadequate rendering of cognitive frames, dynamically shifting meanings, irony, sarcasm, and wordplay. The findings indicate a partial or complete absence of semantic, cultural and pragmatic adaptation in machine translation systems, which points to the limitations of these systems in conveying culturally and pragmatically marked textual content. The study demonstrates that a complete transition to neural machine translation systems without subsequent human post-editing is premature.</abstract>

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Discursive Asymmetry of the Ethnonymic German Adjectives Deutsch and Russisch (A Corpus-based Statistical Study of the Self/Other Dichotomy) </artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">Ethnonymic adjectives in German-language discourse play a key role in constructing self/other dichotomy; however, the quantitative differences in the discursive representation of the adjectives Deutsch and Russisch remain insufficiently studied. The aim of this study is to identify and explain the discursive asymmetry in the distribution of qualia roles (formal, constitutive, telic, agentive) of ethnonymic adjectives in German texts from 1900 to 2025. The material comprises the DWDS-Kernkorpus and the Gegenwartskorpora mit freiem Zugang subcorpora of the German DWDS open text corpus. The study employs three corpus tools for extracting stable collocations, diachronic collocation analysis, and tracking collocate frequency over time. Collocates were classified by dominant qualia type based on the semantics of the modified noun. The analysis reveals a stable asymmetry in the distribution of qualia roles between the two adjectives throughout the entire period under study. For Deutsch, agentive and telic qualia dominate, whereas for Russisch, formal and constitutive qualia prevail. Furthermore, diachronic analysis shows that the qualia structure of both adjectives undergoes significant changes during periods of historical catastrophes and geopolitical shifts. Specifically, the qualia structure of Deutsch changes radically after 1945 (an increase in telic qualia related to the “German question”) and in 1990 (a reorientation toward European integration), while for Russisch the key bifurcation points are 1917, 1930–1950, 2014, and 2022 (dominance of negative telic qualia). It has been established that the frequency of Russisch reaches unprecedented levels in recent years. The identified asymmetry reflects deep discursive mechanisms for constructing “self” and “other” in German linguistic consciousness: the “self” is described through agency and institutionality, while the “other” is described through objectification, essentialization, and corpo-reality. The author's contribution lies in filling a gap in generative lexicon theory (applying qualia structures to the analysis of adjectives rather than nouns only), as well as in the quantitative confirmation of the stability of discursive patterns using German-language material.</abstract>

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Strategies and Tactics in the “Clinical Case Review” as an Spoken Medical Discourse Genre</artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">The paper explores the genre “Clinical Case Review” as a type of oral professional polylogue among physicians. The aim of the study is to identify the communicative strategies and tactics facilitating the discussion of complex clinical cases and to describe their linguistic representation. The relevance of the study lies in the need to reveal how genre conventions in this type of professional communication are both shaped by the professional context and participate in fulfilling social functions. The material comprises 20 palliative and 20 cardiological clinical case reviews available in open access on the Internet. The methodological framework of the study is based on functional-communicative and structural approaches within the framework of discourse analysis. Three main genre strategies are identified: cognitive-communicative, institutional ritualization of communication, and humanization of clinical experience. It is shown that tactics are realized through sequences of discursive moves, which combine both the means of professional academic language and the document format borrowed from written medical discourse, as well as features of spontaneous oral communication. The combination of the documentary form of presenting biomedical information and colloquial markers suggests local hybridization of the genre under study. Due to the multi-aspect nature of communicative goals, several tactics may be simultaneously employed within a single turn which is determined by the specificity of the genre conventions, which are conditioned by the social context. A comparison of the palliative care and cardiology cases revealed interdisciplinary variability in the choice of mitigation, professional solidarity, and emotional and ethical appraisal tactics. The results obtained can be used to systematize knowledge about the genres of oral medical discourse and in teaching medical communication.</abstract>

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Linguistic Resemantization of the Petersburg Text: Mechanisms and Frontiers of “Art” Expansion within the Urban Linguistic Landscape</artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">The study focuses on the morpheme “art” and the specifics of its functioning within the linguistic landscape of St. Petersburg. The subject of the study is the processes of semantic transformation (resemantization) of the “art” morpheme in the names of urban locations and spaces. The analysis of the linguistic landscape reveals an active transformation of the urban environment, where the traditional institutional concept of “iskusstvo” (fine arts) is consistently being replaced by a mobile and commercialized “art paradigm.” Based on the analysis of a corpus of 300 ergonyms, the article identifies an expansion of “art” against the indigenous element of urban nominations “iskusstvo.” The methodology employs a complex of approaches including descriptive method with linguistic observation, definitional, structural-semantic, communicative-pragmatic, and discursive analyses. Furthermore, the study utilizes the resources of the Russian National Corpus and field research techniques of the linguistic landscape, which makes it possible to record pragmatic shifts in the naming of urban objects. The study proposes a semantic typology of “art-nominations” (organic, connotative, and simulative types) and establishes a correlation between the density of the use of the morpheme under study and the nature of urban territories. It is determined that the resemantization of “art” is driven by a complex of factors: morphological (brevity and high word-formation activity of the lexeme), semantic (diffusion and vagueness of meaning), and sociocultural (demands of place branding and commodification). The paper argues that the expansion of “art” leads to its semantic devaluation and the emergence of linguistic simulacra. This process results in the changes in the classical “Petersburg text,” where aesthetic significance is replaced by marketing efficiency, which affects the traditional cultural codes of the city. The theoretical significance of the study lies in the substantiation of a shift in the urban linguistic landscape architecture from the “city-as-a-book” model to the “city-as-an-interface” one. It is concluded that in the linguistic landscape of a Russian city (using St. Petersburg as an example), the morpheme “art” serves as a tool of linguistic marketing, creating surplus symbolic capital under conditions of semantic devaluation of the term.</abstract>

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Assessing the Feasibility and Consequences of Nigeria’s National Language Policy on Foreign Language Education: A Focus on French and Arabic</artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">Nigeria’s revised National Language Policy of 2022 reaffirms the importance of indigenous languages in education while retaining English, French, and Arabic as strategic languages for national cohesion, regional diplomacy, and global engagement. This paper critically examines the feasibility and consequences of implementing the policy, with particular attention to its implications for the teaching and learning of French and Arabic in Nigerian schools. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study draws on policy documents, historical accounts, educational reports, and relevant scholarly literature to assess the institutional, pedagogical, and sociolinguistic realities shaping policy implementation. Findings reveal a significant gap between the multilingual aspirations of the policy and the operational realities of Nigeria’s educational system. Key challenges include inadequate institutional and infrastructural capacity, severe shortages of qualified and professionally prepared teachers, fragmented and outdated curricula, limited instructional resources, and sociolinguistic attitudes that privilege English over other languages. The study further shows that while French retains strategic value for regional integration and diplomacy within West Africa, Arabic remains largely confined to religious and cultural domains, limiting its broader educational and socioeconomic relevance. Despite these constraints, the policy’s multiligual vision offers opportunities for cultural inclusivity, national integration, and international coopertion. The paper argues that the success of the policy depends on sustained investment in teacher education, curriculum renewal, monitoring mechanisms, and public awareness of multilingualism as a develop-ment strategy. It concludes with strategic recommendations for aligning Nigeria’s linguistic diversity with the goals of global competence, educational equity, and sustainable national development.</abstract>

          <abstract lang="ENG">This study examines Ronya Othmann’s Die Sommer through the lens of linguistic land-scape (LL) theory and argues for an expanded understanding of LL as a narrative-discursive formation rather than a phenomenon limited to visible public signage. While conventional LL research has focused primarily on signs, place names, and written displays in public space, this article shows that literary texts can also construct LLs through memory, silence, naming practices, and spatial narration. Using a qualitative text-based analysis, the study explores how Die Sommer represents language, space, and identity in a context marked by marginalization, displacement, and cultural erasure. The findings reveal five interrelated patterns: contested toponymy and renaming, institutional multilingual asymmetry, border semiotics, memory-based counter-landscapes, and material domestic signification. Together, these patterns demonstrate that the novel transforms homes, villages, borders, and remembered geographies into symbolic LLs, in which official and vernacular languages occupy unequal positions. Kurdish survives largely through family memory, oral transmission, and intimate spaces, whereas state languages dominate institutional and public domains. The study contributes to LL scholarship by proposing the concept of a literary LL and by showing how fiction can illuminate hidden dimensions of language, ideology, and belonging that may remain invisible in studies restricted to material signage.</abstract>

          <abstract lang="ENG">This study examines the use of Disclaim resources – specifically Deny and Counter – in the 2024 presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, drawing on Appraisal Theory within Systemic Functional Linguistics. It investigates how linguistic strategies of rejection function to manage disagreement, construct evaluation, and shape interpersonal positioning in real-time political discourse. Adopting a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative analysis with qualitative discourse analysis, the study compares the frequency, distribution, and rhetorical functions of Deny and Counter in the candidates’ debate performances. The findings show that Trump employs 193 Disclaim instances (19.78% of 976 clauses), considerably more than Harris’s 60 instances (13.19% of 455 clauses), indicating a stronger tendency toward oppositional and confrontational rhetoric. In both datasets, Deny overwhelmingly outweighs Counter, with “not” as the most frequent marker, while “but” serves as the primary Counter resource, reflecting a shared preference for direct negation and contrast. The study contributes to the extension of Appraisal Theory to real-time debate interaction and offers insights into how political actors strategically deploy rejection resources to influence audience alignment and evaluative interpretation. The findings highlight the central role of Deny and Counter in persuasive political discourse.</abstract>

          <artTitle lang="ENG">Mediating the Digital Self: A Systematic Litera- ture Review of Teachers’ Perspectives on Technology, Language Education, and the Construction of Linguistic Identity</artTitle>

          <abstract lang="ENG">This systematic literature review synthesizes the main results and conclusions of 33 studies published between 2020 and 2024 examining the dual impact of technology on teacher and student linguistic identities. Six main thematic clusters are identified: technology as a disruptor and reconstructor of teacher authority; technology as a space for plurilingual and translingual identity affirmation; digital policies, structural inequalities, and imposed identities; emotional regulation and the reconstruction of a “capable” digital teacher identity; specific technological affordances enabling identity work; and controversies and contradictory evidence. Overall, findings reveal that technology serves as a powerful mediator in teacher identity reconstruction, prompting shifts from traditional instructor to digital facilitator and cultural mediator. Simultaneously, technology also introduces significant tensions by amplifying sociolinguistic inequities, particularly in under-resourced contexts, where limited access to devices or connectivity can reinforce existing hierarchies. When applied with pedagogical intent, technology-enabled practices like digital storytelling and translingual projects become vital tools for affirming students’ plurilingual identities, allowing them to draw on their full linguistic repertoires. Moreover, reflective, technology-supported professional development is essential for navigating this complex identity work, as it helps teachers critically examine their own positionalities and biases. The review concludes that the influence of technology is shaped by pedagogical stance, institutional support, and engagement with power dynamics, advocating for its use to create inclusive, identity-affirming environments rather than enforcing standardization or a one-size-fits-all model of language instruction.</abstract>

          <abstract lang="ENG">In the context of global communication, the construction of national images in the media has evolved from passive reporting to active meaning modulation. Using China as a case study, this research introduces the Semiotic Intensity Approach (SIA) to quantify how news media integrate verbal, visual, and layout resources to either amplify or attenuate specific narratives. By conceptualizing media discourse as a communicative event, this study conducts a systematic scoping review of a corpus of 56 core studies to construct a unified taxonomy of bias. The synthesis identifies 25 distinct cross-modal mechanisms (14 amplifying and 11 attenuating) that systematically deviate from a standard journalistic factual register. The analysis reveals a quantitative chasm in existing scholarship: while high-arousal amplification strategies dominate academic attention (70.2%), the equally strategic quiet mechanisms of attenuation (29.8%), such as spatial relegation or intersemiotic decoupling, remain under-theorized. The framework demonstrates how intersemiotic synergy acts as a multiplier effect to lock in preferred readings, whereas modal dissonance is frequently deployed to structurally suppress cooperative or positive narratives. The SIA reconceptualizes abstract framing concepts into operationalized metrics, serving as a diagnostic tool for researchers and educators to decode the anatomy of bias. This study establishes a foundation for reproducible, cross-cultural media analysis and highlights the theoretical necessity of moving beyond bias diagnosis toward the active restoration of narrative complexity.</abstract>

          <abstract lang="ENG">The review analyzes S.L. Kushneruk’s monograph, which presents the findings of a study on the discursive mechanisms of conflictogenic meaning-making in Russian-language Telegram discourse, based on public channels covering labor migration. The relevance of the work is determined by the rapid “Telegramization” of public communication, the growing social tension in the sphere of intercultural interaction, and the acute need for scientifically grounded tools for diagnosing destructive content. A novel integrative approach is proposed, combining the principles of third-wave sociolinguistics, discourse studies, cognitive linguistics, and social semiotics. This synthesis enables the author to move beyond the traditional analysis of verbal conflictogens and, for the first time, to present a holistic concept of conflictogenic world-modelling that takes into account the multimodal nature of Telegram communication. A significant scholarly contribution is the development of the original notion of conflictogenic world-modeling, defined as a process of discursive structuring of information based on the “self/other” dichotomy, which serves as an indicator of social tension. The study’s innovative findings include: a) the substantiation and operationalisation of a system of criteria for conflictogenic world-modelling, encompassing legal, socio-psychological, format-related, and linguistic parameters; b) the creation of a typology of linguo-semiotic conflictogens, covering linguistic, paragraphemic, digital, visual, and audial means; c) the development and application of a methodology that proves that the dominant visual framing strategy consists in “imposing” conflict-related meanings onto a neutral image through the verbal code. The monograph will undoubtedly be of interest to a wide range of specialists, including linguists, sociologists, political scientists, media communication experts, as well as public officials dealing with migration policy, information security, and multimodal communication.</abstract>

          <abstract lang="ENG">The media turn has contributed to the development of the medialinguistic paradigm, within which the basic communicative categories of text, genre, and discourse are given a new scientific dimension. V.E. Chernyavskaya’s book presents an original concept of medialinguistics, in which modern media communication is represented through genres, discursive practices, and multimodality. Genres are examined from the perspective of established, traditional patterns and models for conveying various meanings. Genre becomes one of the fundamental criteria for the typology of media texts. The genre function directly correlates with the type of texts. This approach allows us to rethink the role of genres in the media-linguistic paradigm, as it is genres that shape discursive practices into texts. The problem of hybrid genres in the book is covered through the prism of the dominant trends in modern communication. These include hybridization, multimodality, visual intertextuality, etc., whose “pressure” contributes to the transformation of genres and the transposition of genre forms under the conditions of the new technological environment. In addition to the adaptation of media texts to the leading trends (media)communication, there is their adjustment to the distribution channels and the capabilities of the platforms on which they are placed. Therefore, the book focuses on format characteristics, as well as the linguistic and typographic landscapes, which have not yet been the subject of media linguistics. The book presents new, non-trivial approaches to the study of media communication within the media linguistic paradigm and represents a comprehensive scientific concept that includes a well-defined methodology for teaching media linguistics in universities.</abstract>
