The article examines the key Western theories of the 20th century of nations and nationalism, analyzes the main writings of the representatives of primordialist, constructivist, functionalist, Marxist and instrumentalist approaches on this issue, highlights common and diverse features of the theories and substantiates the applicability of the following research topic both for political science and political practice.
