Linguistic Representation of the Value Orientation of a Modern English Manager: Based on the Media Genre of Interview

Authors:
Abstract:

This paper focuses on the value orientations of the modern English leader, examined through linguocultural, linguopragmatic, and axiological lenses. The study draws upon the interview as a media genre, which provides a unique space for verbalizing, transmitting these values and shaping benchmark models of effective management. The empirical basis comprises 50 interviews with top-level managers published in online media between 2020 and 2026 (156 electronic pages, approximately 400 representative contexts). The methodology integrates axiological linguistic analysis, discourse analysis, and quantitative processing. As a result, the study identifies a three-level system of the English leader’s value orientations: individual (experience, hard work, passion, mentors), corporate (team, vision, leadership, innovation, customer orientation), and interpersonal values (empathy, communication). The core of the English leader’s value-based worldview includes experience, empathy, team, vision, customers, and leadership. Consequently, the value orientations of the English leader, grounded in the foundational value of success, integrate professional, corporate, and cultural traditions. Moreover, the study demonstrates the pragmatic and axiological potential of the «interview» genre for verbalizing value orientations. For the purposes of this study, the authors describe linguistic means of value representation at the lexical (nominative and evaluative lexis), grammatical (modal verbs, pronouns), and syntactic levels (imperative sentences, value judgments, precedent utterances). As a result, the comprehensive analytical model developed here enables future comparative research across other linguocultures. The practical relevance lies in its potential application for diagnosing value profiles of leadership candidates, cross-cultural training programs, and corporate communication workshops.
